Rule of thumb: The diameter of your lamp shade should be wider than the widest part of the table lamp. Also, make sure that the height of the shade does not occupy more than 1/3rd of the total height of the table lamp (From the base to the top of the lamp shade). Typically, the 8 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch lamp shades are generally a good fit for table lamps. While this is a guideline, there may be instance where you can break this norm to align with your person tastes and preferences.

Typically in India the lamp shades will have a holder ring which will securely sit on the bulb holder in use on the lamp. The fact that shades are detachable, they can fit into any lamp subject to the right holder being in use.
